Philosophy of Education
I believe education is more than just content knowledge from the core subject areas. I believe children should be educated on social aspects, building teamwork and collaboration, learning from their mistakes, and life skills. I believe students should be educated on the world around them and how to function in the world around them. Children must learn how to socialize and work with others. Throughout your life you must learn how to work as part of a team, with people you may not get along with, and collaborate. Children must learn how to make mistakes and grow from those mistakes. I believe that students must be educated on skills that will guide them not only through school but through life as well. Life skills help children know what to do in everyday situations as well as how to make good decisions.
I believe that a pillar of education is strong collaboration and communication between the teacher, their team members, students, and parents. Teachers need to be able to connect to not only their students, but their team members, parents, and people within the community.
I also believe that teachers should not only set high expectations for their students but to also show students how to set high expectations for themselves. Children should push themselves beyond their capabilities or they will never know what they actually can achieve. Majority of students will only aim as high as teacher set expectations, so it is the responsibility of the teacher to set high standards from the start. I believe it is important that a teacher not only set high expectations for her students, but for herself as well. I think when setting your expectations for students, you should allow for students to set expectations for you as well. I believe that a teacher should want to be a role model for their students and want to impact their students’ lives.
I believe the importance of integrating student's interests into the classroom through books, lessons, and daily discussions. Students are less likely to pay attention during instruction and be less excited to learn if they are not interested in the topic of study. I believe in focusing on student centered rather than teacher centered activities and lessons as well as incorporating technology into daily lessons to give students first hand experiences.
I believe in the importance of incorporating real world experiences into daily classroom procedures and instruction. I am passionate about this because it is important for students to be able to use what they learn inside of the classroom to help solve real world problems, and also be able to bring real world experiences into the classroom. I believe in the importance of celebrating diversity and bringing diversity into the classroom. There are so many different types of children in the world whether it is based on where they come from or how they learn. Children should always be encouraged to celebrate each other’s differences.
